Documentation and Project Management Commissions

Since its inception, Spectacle has been involved in long-term documentation engagements with a range of regional, national and international partners, creating a wealth of video content and an accessible video archive. 

Creative Documentaries and Short Films

In addition to managing long-term projects, Spectacle have also been involved in producing one-off documentary commissions, both in-house and collaborative, as well as creative videos for various organisations.

Well London
Big Lottery Fund, 2008-2011  

We are currently involved in ‘Well London’, a 5-year pan-London project promoting physical and mental well-being as the initiative's official media partner, with communities across the city. Spectacle have been commissioned to document activities, interview partners and set up workshops to offer local residents media training and develop creative project outcomes. The Well London Alliance includes: London Health Commission, Groundwork, London Sustainability Exchange, University of East London, Arts Council England, Central YMCA, and the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust.

 

Groundwork London, Impact Project

Groundwork London / Interreg IV, 2011

Spectacle were commissioned by Groundwork London to produce an educational awareness, participatory film project about climate change, in conjunction with Impact, a Groundwork London-led programme that encourages young people to get involved in environmental activism.

NHS Changing Minds Film

South London and Maudsley Trust, NHS, 2011

Short campaign video promoting a groundbreaking mental health initiative whereby those who have suffered mental health illnesses are trained to deliver training on how to deal with those issues.


Groundwork London Healthy Spaces Film
Groundwork London, 2010

A film documenting Groundwork's involvement in the regeneration of urban spaces around London over one year.


Micronomics
QeC-Eran & City Mine(d), 2010

Micronomics investigates an understanding of small scale self-organised (micro-)initiatives and whether the economy has room for them.


Body Confidence Campaign Video
CYCMA, 2010 (in production)

Animated educational video aimed at 8-11 year-olds, exploring the issue of body image.


Outside The Law: Stories From Guantánamo
Spectacle Productions (2009)


A documentary telling the story of Guantánamo, focusing on the stories of three prisoners, Shaker Aamer, Binyam Mohamed and Omar Deghayes. A powerful rebuke to the myth that Guantánamo holds “the worst of the worst”.


Poverty and Participation in the Media
Joseph Rowntree Foundation, 2008-2009

Another project on which Spectacle have been recently involved is
‘Poverty and Participation in the Media’. Setting up workshops to explore questions such as how UK poverty is depicted in the media, which are good examples and which are not?


Charlton Football Club Social Inclusion Programme
London College of Communication/Screen Academy,  2009

Spectacle ran 6 workshops in and around Charlton Athletic FC for a group of young people from the local area. The group were taught to use the camera, audio and lighting equipment and put their new skills to use, filming the Women’s Football Team in training.


Glass Ceiling an Anti-discrimination public Information clip for European TV and Cinema dissemination
Council of Europe, 2009

The focus of the campaign was the various aspects of discrimination arising out of racist attitudes and prejudices. Our production illustrated the barriers and serves as a call to action that is transnationally comprehendible though the visual message. "Speak out against discrimination".


XL Place Flagey
PTTL / l'Assemblée des voisines  (Belgium) 2007

Co-ordinated by Spectacle, a film by local residents about gentrification in Place Flagey in Brussels and the transformations that have taken place in the area.

Quand les papiers arrivent…When the papers arrive...
PTTL/l'Assemblée des voisines, le CIRÉ (Belgium), 2007

A film that encouraged individuals without official immigration documents to come forward and participate, this short film is a series of interviews that ask 'paperless' individuals in Brussels about the freedom that would be granted should the papers arrive and how it would change their lives.


APaNGO
Interreg IIIB, 2004-2007

Spectacle is a partner in APaNGO a three year long Interreg IIIB funded project.
 APaNGO stands for Advocacy, Participation and Non Governmental Organisations in planning. It aims to increase community involvement in planning and to undertake a study into community involvement in planning in all of the North Western European Countries, with project partners from UK, The Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany and Luxembourg.


Je vous salis, ma rue
PTTL/BNA-BBOT, (Belgium) 2006

A participatory video project where local residents reflect on the gentrification of their neighbourhood and the sometimes unwelcome changes that precipitates.

Channel 4, 2005

A short docu-series for Channel 4 about education and exclusion in the British school system.


Working Broadband
Working Broadband GB, 2005

Spectacle was a core partner in Working Broadband GB (WBGB) a National programme that aimed to assist black and minority ethnic (BME) groups and individuals into the creative and technology industries. This EU Equal programme was aimed at producing large-scale innovative projects that have impact through a direct interface with emerging policies in member states. 
 


Silwood Video Group Vol 1

Silwood Video Group, Spectacle, 2005

The Silwood estate has experienced a massive Single Regeneration Budget (SRB) project where £72 million pounds has been spent over the past 6 years. The Silwood Video Group, with more than 25 members has been documenting and seeking to positively influence changes to their environment. This collection of films and interviews directed by members of the SVG look at the history and 'soft demolishing' of their estate.


Bone Orchestra
Wellcome Trust / Yorkshire Arts, 2004

Commissioned to document the research of the Bone and Mineral Centre, University College London, Spectacle's short, experimental video provided a unique perspective on osteoporosis.


GOLD
Arts Council England, Dance UK, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, VET, Bexley Council, 2004

An experimental dance film exploring the demands of training for Olympic compeition through the movements of two gymnasts, GOLD creates a surreal world evoking the promise of freedom and the power of adrenaline of the early teenage years. Winner of the IMZ Dance Screen Award 2005.

The Truth Lies in Rostock

A documentary about the petrol bombing of a refugee centre by fascists in East Germany, political collusion and the alarming complicity of the spectators who looked on and applauded.
