We believe it is urgent to respond to the police actions in Toronto duringthe G8/G20.  We are writing to invite you to sign on to The Toronto Call. We are hoping to get signatures from trade unionists, faculty, students, community activists, legal workers and cultural workers among others (including those arrested and detained around the G20).   We believe it is possible to shift the terms to debate, and to shine a spotlight on the abusive police practices during the G8/G20.  But we need your help to do that.

Please sign on and circulate the call widely to friends, colleagues, allies and networks who might be willing to sign.

The day starts early for us, but the excitement charges our batteries more than the first coffee of the morning. The Director, 1st AD and Producer Assistant all meet in the office. We pick up the props and head off to North London.

Surprisingly, we get to the location too early. Its miraculous, London transport has for once worked perfectly. We meet the 2nd AD and the director of photography and go to knock Karim’s door. He’s the landlord of the location and wants to give us some instructions: where the actors are allowed to smoke, where we can put all the furniture, the safety measures that we have to keep in mind…

Some of the actors arrive really early too. They were also concerned about the usual transport surprises and prefer to arrive too early than not arrive at all.  They make themselves comfortable upstairs and get to know each other.  It will be a long wait. The beginning of the shoot is hard to get right. It is the key moment when most of the lighting has to be set up in the proper place.

The actors come downstairs. We start shooting all the “above the glass” shots. Mark Saunders, the director, give some directions and Claire Sharples, the 2nd AD, tell the actors where their initial position is. We still need more time.  We crowd all together around the monitor to see how the shot will look. The overexposed effect is great, but we find several dark “stains”: the edge of one small bulb in the ceiling, one of the rubber tops of the tripod’s leg… we cover all the defects with white tape and eventually we see the clapperboard in front of the camera: Roll 1    Scene 1    Take 1

Some feelings characterize the first hours of the shoot, perfectionism and optimism. This is not bad, but it can entail some problems: we can easily run out of time.  We all need to focus. The lunch break keeps being put off and people start getting nervous. Finally, we take the break and everybody seems satisfied with the job done so far.

First directions of the day

The moment arrives to shoot the takes that made us to come to this location: the ones around the glass ceiling. The extras exchange contact numbers and leave the space.

Shots from “under the glass ceiling” work perfectly. Nevertheless, we are using some extra time that we haven’t contracted with the landlord, so we call him asking for one more hour. Costs start to rise, but we can’t let the pressure to drive us to take hasty decisions that will lead to problems in editing.

We move upstairs to shoot from “above the glass ceiling”. Lights are ready, camera in position, actors prepared… and suddenly, without prior warning, the camera switches off. We are already using a second extra hour. Karim, the landlord, arrives to the location. “We are having some technical problems”, how many times has he heard that excuse? Fortunately, the camera starts working again and we are able to take the last shot of the day.

Have we got everything we need? We think so. We tidy up, clean everything, put the furniture in place again… and leave the location. We talk about the day on our way back home. We are tired and a bit worried about having used two extra hours, but this is a normal issue in film production.
The next shooting day will be at Brunel University. We will use their green screen. It will be a quieter day and every take will be more planned because every shot has to be from specific distances and angles. There is no room for improvisation. On the plus side we don’t have time limit to use these premises so there is more time to get things right. It seems that it will be a journey without mishaps, but we won’t count our chickens before they are hatched.

Todos estamos muy contentos con el resultado del rodaje en la localización, lo que nos da un margen de confianza. El último día de rodaje llega. Nos quedan por grabar todas las escenas en Chroma Key. Día muy importante para los especialista de CGI. La iluminación tiene que ser perfecta para que no haya problemas con el Chroma Key y conseguir que el espacio generado no parezca artifial.

A primera hora de la mañana nos dirigimos a Brunel studio. La universidad nos ha cedido su estudio. Alguno de sus estudiantes nos ayudan asistiendo en el rodaje.

Esta vez todo va con más calma. Hay menos actores también, con lo que parece más fácil manejar la situación.  Los actores, Steel, protagonista principal, Wendy y Asif, personajes bajo el cristal, están envueltos en una atmósfera verde que se transformará en el espacio oscuro escondido bajo el cristal una vez finalizada la postproducción.

Grabamos el “descenso” de Steel al otro lado del cristal. Grabamos también el momento en que Steel es consciente de que no es el único atrapado en ese mundo desconcertante.

Todo va muy bien. Todos los técnicos son buenos profesionales que ponen todo su esfuerzo en conseguir un buen trabajo. La iluminación es buena después del gran trabajo de nuestro técnico de iluminación, Rob Collins. Nos convencen los planos y la actuación de los actores. Dave Barnard y Alan Marques, están controlando y procesando el resultado de las imágenes obtenidas a través de su ordenador. Mark Carey, director de fotografía, y Sam Rawlings, focus puller, están consiguiendo un resultado muy bueno en los planos grabados. Mark, el director, y Cati, primer asistente de dirección, dirijen a los actores y ayudan a que todo se cumpla según lo previsto. Los asistentes Ritvan, Rakesh y James están en todo momento dispuestos para lo que sea necesario.Todo está bajo control.

Carla, representante del Consejo de Europa, parece feliz con el resultado.

Liz Adams, la futura editora del proyecto, también está presente en el rodaje. Es la encargada de hacer el making of. Todos los involucrados en el rodaje son entrevistados. Es un documento muy interesante del que poder aprender en un futuro. Los técnicos nos cuentan su papel dentro del rodaje con el fin de que todos podamos entender cómo ha evolucionado este proyecto.

El rodaje termina antes de lo esperado, señal de que todo va bien y de que todo el mundo está contento con el resultado.

Ahora, la segunda parte del proceso comienza y cedemos el turno a la postproducción, que se encargará de dar forma a este video y hacerlo real.

Sólo me queda, desde Spectacle, dar las gracias a todos los que han participado en este proyecto, porque sin vosotros no hubieramos sido capaces de romper este cristal que, aunque invisible, muchas veces pesa sobre nuestras cabezas.

Sí, el día comienza temprano para nosotros, tal vez demasiado, pero la emoción de estar a punto de ver el resultado de tanta planificación nos carga las pilas más que el café con el que iniciamos la jornada. Director, primer asistente de dirección y asistente de producción nos encontramos en la oficina. Recogemos todos los accesorios que preparamos el día anterior y nos dirigimos hacia North London.

Sorprendentemente, llegamos a la localización antes de tiempo. La sorpresa no es que nosotros seamos puntuales, sino que los medios de transporte de esta ciudad no nos la jueguen. Así que allí esperamos a que la segunda asistente de dirección y el director de fotografía lleguen. Llamamos a la puerta de Karim, el dueño de la localización, que nos quiere dar algunas instrucciones antes de que iniciemos el rodaje: dónde pueden fumar los actores, dónde podemos colocar los muebles que tengamos que mover para preparar el set, las precauciones que debemos tomar a nivel de seguridad personal…

Algunos de los actores llegan realmente pronto. Ellos también temen las sorpresas que las obras en el metro puedan darles, y prefieren llegar antes en lugar de no llegar nunca. Se van acomodando en la planta de arriba, donde les servimos algunos refrescos y galletas. La espera será larga. El comienzo del rodaje se hace de rogar, este es el momento clave en el que prácticamente todas las luces que nos harán falta a lo largo del día se ubicarán en el lugar apropiado. Claire y Pilar tienen problemas pegando el papel translúcido al cristal. Mientras todo este movimiento de muebles, cables, luces, trípodes, cámaras y actores se sucede, tenemos la oportunidad de conocer al resto de miembros del equipo que hasta el momento habían permanecido “ocultos” tras un número de teléfono o dirección de correo electrónico.

Los actores bajan. Empezaremos grabando todos los planos que se corresponden con el “mundo sobre el cristal”. Mark Saunders, el director, da algunas instrucciones, y Claire Sharples, la segunda asistente de dirección, coloca a los actores en su posición de partida para hacer las tomas de las multitudes caminando.

Primeras tomas del dia

Todavía necesitamos algo más de tiempo. Todos nos amontonamos alrededor del monitor donde vemos el resultado final del encuadre. El gran angular es excepcional. El efecto sobreexpuesto nos gusta a todos, aunque encontramos pequeñas “manchas” negras por doquier: el borde de un halónego en el techo, el tope de goma de la pata de un trípode… cubrimos estas pequeñas imperfecciones con cinta adhesiva blanca y por fin podemos ver la claqueta delante de la cámara: Roll 1 Scene 1 Take 1.

Buscando los "8 errores" alrededor del monitor

Si algo caracteriza las primeras horas de un rodaje es el perfeccionismo y el optmismo, lo que no es malo, pero puede conllevar algo bastante peligroso: que se nos acabe el tiempo y no hayamos grabado todos los planos requeridos. Además, todos necesitamos centrarnos en qué estamos buscando y meternos en el papel. Así es como la hora de comer se va posponiendo, y algunos miembros del equipo empiezan a ponerse nerviosos. La pausa llega y todos parecen satisfechos con lo que se ha grabado hasta el momento.

Llega la hora de realizar las tomas por las que hemos seleccionado esta localización: aquellas escenas que tienen lugar entorno al techo de cristal. Los extras marchan, no sin haber intercambiado antes sus contactos.

Los planos desde el “mundo bajo el cristal” marchan bien. Sin embargo, ya estamos utilizando algún tiempo extra que no habíamos contratado con el dueño de la localización, al que llamamos para pedirle una hora más. Los costes empiezan a incrementarse exponencialmente, pero no podemos permitir que la tensión nos empuje a tomar decisiones apresuradas que tal vez conlleven problemas más tarde a la hora de la edición.

Nos trasladamos rápidamente al piso superior para rodar los planos del cristal desde el “mundo sobre el cristal“. Las luces están a punto, la cámara preparada, los actores listos… y de repente, la cámara se apaga sin previo aviso. Estamos usando nuestra segunda hora extra sobre el tiempo contratado. Para que todo resulte todavía más “excitante”, Karim, el propietario del espacio, llega. “Estamos teniendo algunos problemas técnicos..” ¿cuántas veces habrá oído ya la misma excusa? Afortunadamente, conseguimos que la cámara vuelva a la vida y grabamos el último plano programado para este primer día de rodaje.

¿Tenemos todo lo que necesitamos? Parece que sí. Recogemos, limpiamos, recolocamos muebles bajo la atenta mirada de Karim… y abandonamos la localización. Intercambiamos algunas impresiones respecto al primer día de rodaje en el trayecto de vuelta a la oficina. Estamos cansados y algo preocupados por haber necesitado sobrepasar tanto el límite horario, pero en el mundo audiovisual este tipo de situaciones se dan a menudo.

El próximo día el rodaje será en el estudio de Brunel University. Usaremos su estudio verde para poder rodar los planos que requieren chroma key. Parece que será un día más tranquilo y que tas tomas serán muy matemáticas, ya que deberán ser desde unas distancias y ángulos muy determinados. No habrá espacio para la improvisación, y por otra parte no tenemos límite horario en cuanto al uso de las instalaciones. Parece que será una jornada sin complicaciones, pero no cantemos victoria antes de tiempo.

The day before the shoot. The atmosphere is filled with nerves. We have the last meeting to decide the final details for the shoot.

In the meeting we decide the role each person will fulfill during the shoot. We try to organize every detail for the next day and to have a clear schedule. In the morning, first thing is to meet Karim, the owner of the location. At the same time, the technical equipment should arrive and the technicians start setting up. There will also be a meeting with the director, the DoP, CGI specialists and the first AD while the second AD is getting the frosted glass ready.

At 11.30 everything should be ready to start shooting.

During the meeting, the storyboard and the shooting plan are on the floor. We can see every shot, the technical crew and actors needed in each of them as well as the props needed.

We decide which actors will participate in each shot, their role, which directions they are going to take, how many of them there are in each shot.

We check the list of things we need to take to the shoot. All the props we have been collecting like hats, coats, handbags…and even a crutch…

We have the contracts, the make up, the menu, video camara to shoot ‘the making off‘ and the camera to take pictures during the shooting.

Everything seems to be ready.  We send an email to all the cast and the technical crew with the call sheet and all the information needed: address, contacts, map, time…and we wish everybody good luck.

We phone all the actors to make sure they are coming the following day and that they received all the information.

And…even if we are still nervous, we leave the office feeling that everything is under control. Next day we will meet at 7 am at Lavender Hill to start with the real action. The show is about to begin…

Último día antes del rodaje. Todos estamos de los nervios. Hacemos la última reunión para atar los cabos sueltos y estar preparados para lo que llegue.

Tenemos equipo técnico, actores, localización, luces, cámara, papel adhesivo, catering… Sólo queda hacer pequeñas matizaciones sobre qué papel adoptará cada uno el día del rodaje y echar un ojo al plan de rodaje.

Intentamos organizar con mucho detalle el día siguiente. A primera hora nos reuniremos con Karim, el dueño de la localización. Nos explicará las reglas para mantener todo bajo control una vez dentro. Al mismo tiempo llegará el material (luces y cámara) y los técnicos comenzarán a prepararlo todo para rodar. Mientras, director, DoP, ayudante de dirección y especialistas de CGI tendrán una reunión. Al mismo tiempo, el segundo ayudante de dirección preparará el cristal. Para las 11.30, nos dicen, debería estar todo listo para el rodaje.

De nuevo, el storyboard está en el suelo y el plan de rodaje con los planos que hemos decidido rodar, los actores, el equipo técnico y el tiempo que nos llevará el rodaje.

Hacemos un repaso de los actores, Decidimos qué actores participan en cada plano, el papel de cada uno de ellos, qué dirección van a tomar, cuántos de ellos aparecen en plano…

Repasamos la lista de cosas que necesitamos llevar. Hemos ido recopilando todos los accesorios que necesitamos que los actores lleven para poder hacerlos parecer diferentes en distintos planos. Llevamos sombreros, mochilas, abrigos, bolsas de la compra…y hasta una muleta.

Llevamos el maquillaje, los contratos y el menú que deben elegir para comer, cámaras para grabar el making of y cámara de fotos.

Parece que está todo listo. Que estamos preparados para el gran día. Mandamos un email a todos los actores y equipo técnico con toda la información necesaria: teléfonos de contacto, dirección, mapa, hora…y les deseamos toda la suerte del mundo.

Llamamos a todos los actores una vez más para asegurarnos de que no nos fallará nadie.

Y…aunque seguimos nerviosos, dejamos la oficina con le extraña sensación de que todo está bajo control.  A las 7 de la mañana del día siguiente, quedamos en Lavender Hill para comenzar nuestra aventura.

Acomódense en sus butacas…El espectáculo está a punto de comenzar…

After having kept you in suspense with the “focus puller” problem, the moment has arrived to clear up all the doubts: Sam Rawlings has chosen to join us in the damp London instead of taking a short working trip to Italy. Well, that’s a relief!

Nevertheless, after doing the numbers we realised that something was wrong with the casting. We’re lacking two actors: someone representing the Middle East and someone from North Africa. The shooting will be in less than a week and there’s a weekend and a bank holiday before. We have to organise an audition and decide immediately who will be the new actors. We announce the second audition and in a few minutes we have printed out some new faces cv’s. We’ll risk our necks in a few hours and with a small sample of just eight actors. As if that wasn’t enough, we can’t use the same venue where we held the casting the first time. Fortunately, a charming Scottish security guy who greets us every morning with a “Buenos días, señorita”, suggests us to use the office next to ours. So we organise the audition and choose Rebecca Nasir and Rungano Nyoni, two young up-and-coming talents from London. Rungano forgot her appointment for the audition, right, but we know that she won’t forget the shooting day, will she?

Maybe the shooting day will arrive and we won’t have hands enough to set everything up and move all the furniture in the location, but we have at least our crew and actors:

- Sam Rawlings, the slippery focus puller
- Rob Collins, the gaffer who will light our path
- Pilar, Cati and Clair, as producer’s assistant, 1st and 2nd AD

- Completing the cast, Maine Auguste, Leonie Charles, Fan Yang, Daz Kaye, Denis Khoroshko, Rungano Nyoni, Angela Tennant and Víctor Zaragoza, inhabitants of the impersonal world above the glass

We have all that we need, haven’t we? When we visited the location it was clear that the frosted effect that we’d seen in the pictures is what we need for our shoot, but the glass floor is totally transparent. Actually, the pictures that we’d seen were from a glass door.

Is there any international frosting measure?

We have to find out how to get this look without damaging the glass floor. We find some stores next to the office where we can get a frosting spray, but we prefer a window frosting film that we’ve found in an online store, but we’ll need at least 3 working days to get it dispatched. As we said before, there is a weekend and a bank holiday before the shooting day. We’re running out of time, as usual. We call the providers and explain our problem. We give them the address of the location. If Karim isn’t there when they arrive, they can deliver it to Mark Carey, who fortunately lives in the same building. If he’s not at home, they’ll leave the parcel in his neighbour’s home. All the possibilities are catered for. We can just cross our fingers and hope Sam won’t run away to Italy, Rungano will remember her appointment with us and the frosting film will get to the location on time.

Tras dejar en suspense la cuestión “1er asistente de cámara” parece que llega el momento de despejar las dudas al respecto: Sam Rawlings optará por trabajar con nosotros en la húmeda Londres en lugar de hacer una escapada laboral a Italia. Todos respiramos tranquilos.

Sin embargo, echamos cuentas y algo falla con el casting. Nos hacen falta un par de actores más, alguien que represente Oriente Medio o el norte de Africa. El rodaje es en menos de una semana. Tenemos que hacer el casting y decidir inmediatamente a quién queremos, ya que hay un fin de semana y un festivo de por medio. Convocamos un segundo casting y en cuestión de minutos tenemos impresos algunos currículos y nuevas caras. Vamos a jugárnoslo todo en un par de horas con una pequeña muestra de tan sólo ocho personas. Por si fuera poco, no tenemos a nuestra disposición el recinto que usamos la última vez para realizar las pruebas. Afortunadamente, un encantador escocés que nos saluda cada mañana con un “Buenos días, señorita” y que trabaja como security en la entrada del bloque de oficinas, nos sugiere que hablemos con el propietario de una oficina que está en nuestro mismo pasillo. Por lo visto nos la pueden alquilar por unas horas para llevar a cabo el casting allí. Es así como nos hacemos con Rebecca Nasir y Rungano Nyoni, dos jóvenes promesas del panorama artístico londinense. A pesar de que Rungano se ha olvidado de su cita con nosotros, y de lo problemático que podría ser que “perdiera la memoria” precisamente el día de la grabación, confiamos en que en el momento clave sea puntual.

Tal vez llegue la hora del rodaje y nos falten manos para mover muebles y preparar el set, pero al menos tenemos nuestro equipo técnico básico y a nuestros actores:
- Mark Saunders Director/Producer
- Mark Carey, el director de fotografía
- Sam Rawlings como el escurridizo 1er asistente de cámara
- Rob Collins, jefe de eléctricos que iluminará el camino a seguir
- Pilar, Cati y Claire como asistente de producción, primer y segundo ayudante de dirección
- Steel Wallis, la cara principal en el video, junto con Wendy Forbes, Hannah Raehese, Rebecca Nasir y Asif Dewan, que lo acompañarán sobre y bajo el suelo de cristal.
- Completando el casting, Maine Auguste, Leonie Charles, Fan Yang, Daz Kaye, Denis Khoroshko, Rungano Nyoni, Angela Tennant y Víctor Zaragoza serán los habitantes del impersonal mundo sobre el cristal

Tenemos todo lo que nos hace falta, ¿no? Cuando visitamos la localización quedó claro que el efecto translúcido de las fotos sería el ideal para los planos que tenemos proyectados, pero el cristal del suelo es totalmente transparente. Realmente las fotos del cristal translúcido son de una puerta.

¿Existe una medida internacional de translucidez?

Tenemos que investigar de qué opciones disponemos para lograr ese look sin estropear el techo de cristal. Iniciamos la búsqueda a través de internet. Encontramos varias tiendas cercanas a la oficina en las que venden un spray que podría servir, pero preferimos usar un papel adhesivo que tardará, como poco, tres días en llegar. Como decíamos, hay un fin de semana y un festivo de por medio. El tiempo está muy ajustado. Llamamos a los proveedores y les explicamos la situación. Les facilitamos la dirección de la localización. En caso de que Karim no esté allí cuando lleguen, lo entregarán a Mark Carey, que afortunadamente vive en el mismo bloque. De no encontrarse en el domicilio, dejarán el paquete en la casa del vecino. Todas las posibilidades están cubiertas. Sólo podemos cruzar los dedos y confiar en que Sam no escape a Italia, Rungano recuerde que tiene una cita con nosotros el jueves y que el papel translúcido llegue a tiempo a la localización.
