Todos estamos muy contentos con el resultado del rodaje en la localización, lo que nos da un margen de confianza. El último día de rodaje llega. Nos quedan por grabar todas las escenas en Chroma Key. Día muy importante para los especialista de CGI. La iluminación tiene que ser perfecta para que no haya problemas con el Chroma Key y conseguir que el espacio generado no parezca artifial.

A primera hora de la mañana nos dirigimos a Brunel studio. La universidad nos ha cedido su estudio. Alguno de sus estudiantes nos ayudan asistiendo en el rodaje.

Esta vez todo va con más calma. Hay menos actores también, con lo que parece más fácil manejar la situación.  Los actores, Steel, protagonista principal, Wendy y Asif, personajes bajo el cristal, están envueltos en una atmósfera verde que se transformará en el espacio oscuro escondido bajo el cristal una vez finalizada la postproducción.

Grabamos el “descenso” de Steel al otro lado del cristal. Grabamos también el momento en que Steel es consciente de que no es el único atrapado en ese mundo desconcertante.

Todo va muy bien. Todos los técnicos son buenos profesionales que ponen todo su esfuerzo en conseguir un buen trabajo. La iluminación es buena después del gran trabajo de nuestro técnico de iluminación, Rob Collins. Nos convencen los planos y la actuación de los actores. Dave Barnard y Alan Marques, están controlando y procesando el resultado de las imágenes obtenidas a través de su ordenador. Mark Carey, director de fotografía, y Sam Rawlings, focus puller, están consiguiendo un resultado muy bueno en los planos grabados. Mark, el director, y Cati, primer asistente de dirección, dirijen a los actores y ayudan a que todo se cumpla según lo previsto. Los asistentes Ritvan, Rakesh y James están en todo momento dispuestos para lo que sea necesario.Todo está bajo control.

Carla, representante del Consejo de Europa, parece feliz con el resultado.

Liz Adams, la futura editora del proyecto, también está presente en el rodaje. Es la encargada de hacer el making of. Todos los involucrados en el rodaje son entrevistados. Es un documento muy interesante del que poder aprender en un futuro. Los técnicos nos cuentan su papel dentro del rodaje con el fin de que todos podamos entender cómo ha evolucionado este proyecto.

El rodaje termina antes de lo esperado, señal de que todo va bien y de que todo el mundo está contento con el resultado.

Para el recuerdo, esta foto final del equipo de rodaje de este video contra la discriminación “The Glass Ceiling”.

Ahora, la segunda parte del proceso comienza y cedemos el turno a la postproducción, que se encargará de dar forma a este video y hacerlo real.

Sólo me queda, desde Spectacle, dar las gracias a todos los que han participado en este proyecto, porque sin vosotros no hubieramos sido capaces de romper este cristal que, aunque invisible, muchas veces pesa sobre nuestras cabezas.

The day before the shoot. The atmosphere is filled with nerves. We have the last meeting to decide the final details for the shoot.

In the meeting we decide the role each person will fulfill during the shoot. We try to organize every detail for the next day and to have a clear schedule. In the morning, first thing is to meet Karim, the owner of the location. At the same time, the technical equipment should arrive and the technicians start setting up. There will also be a meeting with the director, the DoP, CGI specialists and the first AD while the second AD is getting the frosted glass ready.

At 11.30 everything should be ready to start shooting.

During the meeting, the storyboard and the shooting plan are on the floor. We can see every shot, the technical crew and actors needed in each of them as well as the props needed.

We decide which actors will participate in each shot, their role, which directions they are going to take, how many of them there are in each shot.

We check the list of things we need to take to the shoot. All the props we have been collecting like hats, coats, handbags…and even a crutch…

We have the contracts, the make up, the menu, video camara to shoot ‘the making off‘ and the camera to take pictures during the shooting.

Everything seems to be ready.  We send an email to all the cast and the technical crew with the call sheet and all the information needed: address, contacts, map, time…and we wish everybody good luck.

We phone all the actors to make sure they are coming the following day and that they received all the information.

And…even if we are still nervous, we leave the office feeling that everything is under control. Next day we will meet at 7 am at Lavender Hill to start with the real action. The show is about to begin…

Parece que todo marcha por el buen camino: hemos encontrado un estudio y hemos decidido hacernos con una estructura de plexiglas. Además, este estudio ofrece algunos servicios extra que nos ahorrarán tiempo buscando cámara e iluminación. Por otra parte, el plexiglas también presenta algunas ventajas respecto al cristal: es mucho más fácil conseguirlo y se puede encargar con tan sólo un par de días de antelación (recordemos que el cristal tenía que encargarse al menos 15 días antes). En conclusión: todos estamos satisfechos y más “relajados”. Es un buen momento para empezar a centrarnos en la planificación del rodaje.

Nos hacemos con el desglose de los planos y los agrupamos en función de los actores que aparecen en ellos y de los requisitos técnicos. Lo ideal sería si pudiéramos trabajar un día con los extras y otro día con los actores principales. Nos ahorraríamos algo de dinero ya que no es imprescindible tener a ocho extras trabajando durante dos días cuando su papel de pasearse delante de la cámara, si bien es esencial, puede rodarse en una mañana. Con lo de “requisitos técnicos” nos referimos a en qué planos nos hará falta la estructura de plexiglas y en cuáles no. Afortunadamente, ambos factores son compatibles: los planos donde necesitamos a los extras no requieren de estructura de plexiglas.

Y así es como llegamos a la siguiente planificación del rodaje “ideal”, y con “ideal” quiero decir “muy optimista”:

• Primer día por la mañana:

8 extras + actor principal + 3 actores secundarios (llamémosles B, C, D)

Rodaje en green screen.

• Primer día por la tarde:

Actor principal + 3 actores secundarios (llamémosles B, C, D)

Rodaje en green screen.

• Segundo día:

Actor principal + 2 actores secundarios (llamémosles E, F)

Rodaje en green screen con estructura de plexiglas.

Estamos tan familiarizados con el proyecto que todo parece muy obvio para nosotros, pero es difícil intentar explicar con palabras cada plano, sería un sinsentido. Resulta mucho más práctico e intuitivo ver el plan de rodaje, ya sabes, una visión gráfica, con colores, dibujos, y todas esas cosas que aligeran de palabras cualquier descripción y hacen todo mucho más fácil. Como dicen, una imagen vale más que mil palabras. Así que si quieres ver un primer borrador de nuestro plan de rodaje simplemente haz click aquí.

Si todo esto sale adelante significaría, además, que nos estaríamos ahorrando alrededor de 1000 euros en actores. Pero eso no supone mayor beneficio para la productora; simplemente significa que el dinero se mueve de una parte a otra del presupuesto. Vamos, que no son malas noticias, pero tampoco excelentes noticias.

Bien, bien, parece que el mecanismo se pone en marcha. Ahora “sólo” tenemos que reservar el estudio, citar a los actores, encargar el plexiglas y empezar a contratar personal técnico y artístico. Casi nada.

Everything seems to be on the right track: we’ve found a studio and we’ve decided to get the perspex structure. The studio also offers some extra services that will save us time researching camera and lighting equipment. Perspex has also some advantages compared to the glass: it’s easier to get it and we just need to order it a couple of days in advance (whereas we would need to order the glass with at least 15 days in advance). Summing up: we are all really pleased and “relaxed”. It’s a good time to start working hard on the shoot schedule.

We get hold of the breakdown, we group the shots depending on the actors and on the technical requirements in each of them. It would be perfect if we could work just one day with all the extras and another day with the main characters. Then we could save some money as we wouldn’t need eight extras working during two days when their role of strolling in front of the camera, even if it’s crucial, can be done in one morning. By  “technical requirements” I meant the shots will need the perspex structure. Fortunately, both of the factors are compatible: the shots where we need the extras don’t need the perspex structure.

So we get to the next “ideal” shooting plan (when I say “ideal” I mean “very optimistic”):

• First day. Morning:

8 extras + main character + 3 background characters (let’s say B, C, D)

Green screen shooting.

• First day. Afternoon:

Main character + 3 background characters (let’s say B, C, D)

Green screen shooting.

• Second day:

Main actor + 2 background characters (let’s say E, F)

Green screen shooting and perspex structure.

We are already so familiar with the project that everything seems obvious, but it’s hard to explain with words each shot, so there’s no point in trying to do it. It’s much easier and intuitive to download the shooting plan so you can get a literal view, with color, design, and all that stuff that makes things more user friendly. If these plans go ahead it will also mean that we would be saving circa £1000 in our casting. But this doesn’t mean that the company would profit; it just means that the money is moving from one point of the budget to another. In short, it’s not bad news, but it’s not excellent either.

Good, good, it looks like the project is up and running. Now we “only” need to book the studio, get the actors there on time, order the perspex and start hiring technical staff. That’s nothing!

After  making the storyboard, all of us have a clear idea of what we are looking for. We have decided the shots, the camera angles, the atmosphere, the sound and the characters all we need to make the project real. Now we need to choose the real actors and we start thinking about the casting.

After publishing the advert on the internet, we receive lots of emails from people from different backgrounds and nationalities interested in coming to the casting. We went through all the applicants and decide the day the audition will be held.

Actors waiting in the entrance. We give them the script and the treatment and the audition starts. Different people in the same room moving all around, falling in different ways, showing different expressions in front of a camera, trying to be someone they are not..difficult task! Everybody seems to be having fun and enjoying the audition. That is good!

After the audition, there is only one more difficult thing to do…Choose the actors and be chosen from them…

Día a día nuestro proyecto va tomando forma. Tenemos el guión, el storyboard, la atmósfera y estética que queremos transmitir en el video…pero nos falta un pequeño pero importante detalle en el que pensar: ¡LOS ACTORES!

Cuando te detienes a pensar tanto en un proyecto, una de las partes más importantes para visualizarlo es ponerle cara a los actores. Lo hace parecer más real, más cercano.

Este es uno de los motivos por el que todos estábamos impacientes por empezar con las pruebas para el casting.

Redactamos nuestro anuncio y lo publicamos en Internet. A las pocas horas el correo electrónico está lleno con CV´s de actores de distintas nacionalidades, sexo, edad… Hace ilusión pensar que hemos generado un interés tan grande entre ellos.

Tras hacer la selección para el casting, el día de la audición llega… A todos nos parece divertido e interesante a la vez. Incluso el lugar elegido para hacer la audición tiene un encanto especial, Battersea Art Centre. En la entrada, los actores nos esperan. Desde el principio todo tiene un aspecto muy teatral. Algunos están sentados en esas enormes y antiguas sillas que podrían pertenecer a personajes de otro tiempo. Les repartimos el guión y la audición comienza.  Actores y actrices, muy diferentes todos ellos, en una misma habitación intentando sacar lo mejor de si mismos. Andando de distintos modos, saltando y cayendo de la mejor forma posible, expresando emociones ante una cámara, simulando ser quién no son, ¡difícil tarea!

La audición termina y todos salen sonriendo. ¿Qué os ha parecido? – les pregunto – Y uno de ellos (¿posible personaje principal?) me contesta: Diferente pero muy divertido.

Tras terminar con la audición, queda la decisión más díficil… Elegir a los actores y que ellos nos elijan a nosotros…
