After having kept you in suspense with the “focus puller” problem, the moment has arrived to clear up all the doubts: Sam Rawlings has chosen to join us in the damp London instead of taking a short working trip to Italy. Well, that’s a relief!

Nevertheless, after doing the numbers we realised that something was wrong with the casting. We’re lacking two actors: someone representing the Middle East and someone from North Africa. The shooting will be in less than a week and there’s a weekend and a bank holiday before. We have to organise an audition and decide immediately who will be the new actors. We announce the second audition and in a few minutes we have printed out some new faces cv’s. We’ll risk our necks in a few hours and with a small sample of just eight actors. As if that wasn’t enough, we can’t use the same venue where we held the casting the first time. Fortunately, a charming Scottish security guy who greets us every morning with a “Buenos días, señorita”, suggests us to use the office next to ours. So we organise the audition and choose Rebecca Nasir and Rungano Nyoni, two young up-and-coming talents from London. Rungano forgot her appointment for the audition, right, but we know that she won’t forget the shooting day, will she?

Maybe the shooting day will arrive and we won’t have hands enough to set everything up and move all the furniture in the location, but we have at least our crew and actors:

- Sam Rawlings, the slippery focus puller
- Rob Collins, the gaffer who will light our path
- Pilar, Cati and Clair, as producer’s assistant, 1st and 2nd AD
- Steel Wallis, main face of the video, accompanied by Wendy Forbes, Hannah Raehese, Rebecca Nasir and Asif Dewan in the world above and below the glass.
- Completing the cast, Maine Auguste, Leonie Charles, Fan Yang, Daz Kaye, Denis Khoroshko, Rungano Nyoni, Angela Tennant and Víctor Zaragoza, inhabitants of the impersonal world above the glass

We have all that we need, haven’t we? When we visited the location it was clear that the frosted effect that we’d seen in the pictures is what we need for our shoot, but the glass floor is totally transparent. Actually, the pictures that we’d seen were from a glass door.

Is there any international frosting measure?

We have to find out how to get this look without damaging the glass floor. We find some stores next to the office where we can get a frosting spray, but we prefer a window frosting film that we’ve found in an online store, but we’ll need at least 3 working days to get it dispatched. As we said before, there is a weekend and a bank holiday before the shooting day. We’re running out of time, as usual. We call the providers and explain our problem. We give them the address of the location. If Karim isn’t there when they arrive, they can deliver it to Mark Carey, who fortunately lives in the same building. If he’s not at home, they’ll leave the parcel in his neighbour’s home. All the possibilities are catered for. We can just cross our fingers and hope Sam won’t run away to Italy, Rungano will remember her appointment with us and the frosting film will get to the location on time.

Tras dejar en suspense la cuestión “1er asistente de cámara” parece que llega el momento de despejar las dudas al respecto: Sam Rawlings optará por trabajar con nosotros en la húmeda Londres en lugar de hacer una escapada laboral a Italia. Todos respiramos tranquilos.

Sin embargo, echamos cuentas y algo falla con el casting. Nos hacen falta un par de actores más, alguien que represente Oriente Medio o el norte de Africa. El rodaje es en menos de una semana. Tenemos que hacer el casting y decidir inmediatamente a quién queremos, ya que hay un fin de semana y un festivo de por medio. Convocamos un segundo casting y en cuestión de minutos tenemos impresos algunos currículos y nuevas caras. Vamos a jugárnoslo todo en un par de horas con una pequeña muestra de tan sólo ocho personas. Por si fuera poco, no tenemos a nuestra disposición el recinto que usamos la última vez para realizar las pruebas. Afortunadamente, un encantador escocés que nos saluda cada mañana con un “Buenos días, señorita” y que trabaja como security en la entrada del bloque de oficinas, nos sugiere que hablemos con el propietario de una oficina que está en nuestro mismo pasillo. Por lo visto nos la pueden alquilar por unas horas para llevar a cabo el casting allí. Es así como nos hacemos con Rebecca Nasir y Rungano Nyoni, dos jóvenes promesas del panorama artístico londinense. A pesar de que Rungano se ha olvidado de su cita con nosotros, y de lo problemático que podría ser que “perdiera la memoria” precisamente el día de la grabación, confiamos en que en el momento clave sea puntual.

Tal vez llegue la hora del rodaje y nos falten manos para mover muebles y preparar el set, pero al menos tenemos nuestro equipo técnico básico y a nuestros actores:

Tenemos todo lo que nos hace falta, ¿no? Cuando visitamos la localización quedó claro que el efecto translúcido de las fotos sería el ideal para los planos que tenemos proyectados, pero el cristal del suelo es totalmente transparente. Realmente las fotos del cristal translúcido son de una puerta.

¿Existe una medida internacional de translucidez?

Tenemos que investigar de qué opciones disponemos para lograr ese look sin estropear el techo de cristal. Iniciamos la búsqueda a través de internet. Encontramos varias tiendas cercanas a la oficina en las que venden un spray que podría servir, pero preferimos usar un papel adhesivo que tardará, como poco, tres días en llegar. Como decíamos, hay un fin de semana y un festivo de por medio. El tiempo está muy ajustado. Llamamos a los proveedores y les explicamos la situación. Les facilitamos la dirección de la localización. En caso de que Karim no esté allí cuando lleguen, lo entregarán a Mark Carey, que afortunadamente vive en el mismo bloque. De no encontrarse en el domicilio, dejarán el paquete en la casa del vecino. Todas las posibilidades están cubiertas. Sólo podemos cruzar los dedos y confiar en que Sam no escape a Italia, Rungano recuerde que tiene una cita con nosotros el jueves y que el papel translúcido llegue a tiempo a la localización.

So what’s the conclusion from the director of photography after having visited the location with the glass floor? Does the CGI expert agree with this space? We now depend on these people to take the next steps. Once again we’re at a standstill and, considering that we’re running out of time, being unable to do anything is really stressful. The worst of all is to know that maybe the conclusion will be that we have to go back to our previous plan, forget about the location with the glass floor and order the perspex. This would mean that we’ve been wasting time that we don’t have just to end up going back to the starting point.

It seems to fit our requirements, but the CGI experts, Dave Barnard and Alan Marques, have the final say. Fortunately, after a few days, we receive some videos that make everything much clearer. They are the pre-visualization of the shooting in the location and in the studio. Alan has made 3D simulations of the shooting that are really useful. All the creative decisions now become technical decisions and the pre-visualizations wipe out the charm of the uncertainty, but I think we’ve had enough uncertainty so far, so we’re really pleased with these videos.

Thanks to this, we now know which lenses we need, the distance and angle of the shots… we even know how tall our actors have to be!

Finally, we can happily say that this is REALLY up and running.

Now we can go ahead and we all know that everything will speed up, but this doesn’t have to finish up in tragedy if we all know what we have to do and if we’re organized. We know which camera we need: the Red One; which lenses and lighting we have to order; which other props we have to get, like a black and a green cloth, a green rope, a window frosting film…

On the other side, the moment has arrived to speak with the owner of the location, and that’s something that we’re a bit concerned about. We’re really enthusiastic with the idea of shooting the video in that place, but… what if he is not as keen on it as we are? What if he doesn’t like more than 20 people wandering around his house, with a lot of cameras and lighting and food? (yes, it’ll be a long working day and we all need to eat at some point).

We visit the location wearing our best smiles and promising to behave. We take the measure of the glass, try different lenses and angles… and speak with the landlord. It’s a tricky issue because this location is his house, and he’s had bad past experiences with big production crews, so he prefers small photographic projects. He’s concerned about the implications for the neighbourhood. We get to an agreement and he even gives us some advice regarding the catering. Things are looking better… or are they?

Suddenly a dark cloud sets over our heads. The focus puller calls saying that he’s been offered a 3 day job in Italy. We’re just offering him a 2 day job in Clapton. Mark, the Director of Photography, asks us to sort it out, even to put off the shooting day. No, that’s not possible. We’ve already contacted the actors, the Council of Europe, the other studio… Mark trusts in this focus puller and thinks he’s a key factor in this project. We’ll use state-of-the-art technologies and he only feels sure working with this guy. Few people know how to work with these equipments. Once again we see how many important people there are behind a film, while all we’ve dealt with so far is a few actors.

¿A qué conclusión ha llegado el director de fotografía después de haber visitado la localización con el suelo de cristal? ¿Qué opina el experto en infografía acerca de la validez de tal espacio para aplicar luego los efectos visuales? Cualquier decisión que tomemos ahora depende de lo que estos dos miembros del equipo decidan. Una vez más nos encontramos inmovilizados y, teniendo en cuenta el poco tiempo del que disponemos, resulta estresante no poder hacer nada. Lo peor es pensar en la posibilidad de que la conclusión sea que tenemos que volver al plan anterior, olvidarnos de la localización con el suelo de cristal y encargar el plexiglás, porque eso significaría que hemos perdido tiempo del que no disponemos para acabar volviendo al punto de partida.

El día después de la reunión en la que decidimos apostar por la localización, Mark Carey, el director de fotografía, nos envía estas fotos:

Parece que se ajusta a nuestras necesidades, pero todavía no está todo dicho: la última palabra la tienen los expertos en infografía. Afortunadamente, tras unos días de espera, nos llegan unos vídeos que arrojan un poco de luz sobre el camino a seguir. Se trata de unas previsualizaciones del rodaje en la localización y en el estudio del chroma key. Alan Marques, uno de nuestros infógrafos, ha generado unas simulaciones 3D del rodaje que son infinitamente útiles. Realmente podría decirse que esto atenta contra la esencia del cine como la fotografía digital lo hace contra la analógica. Todas las decisiones creativas se convierten en decisiones técnicas y en previsualizaciones que quitan todo el encanto de la incertidumbre, pero creo que de incertidumbre estamos bien servidos, así que no podemos recibir estos vídeos sino con mucha alegría.

Gracias a esto sabemos qué tipo de objetivo necesitaremos, la distancia y ángulos desde los que deberemos filmar… prácticamente sabemos incluso cuánto deberían medir nuestros actores.

Ahora sí, por fin, podemos decir que todo está en marcha DE VERDAD.

Por fin podemos avanzar, y todos sabemos que ahora es cuando todo se acelerará, pero con calma y organización esto no tiene porqué acabar en tragedia. Ya sabemos qué cámara nos hará falta: la Red One; qué lentes e iluminación necesitaremos; qué otros accesorios tenemos que conseguir, como una pieza de tela negra, otra verde, una cuerda verde, un papel adhesivo que proporcione al cristal un aspecto empañado…

Por otra parte, ha llegado un momento que hemos temido desde la última reunión: tenemos que hablar con el dueño de la localización. Todos estamos muy entusiasmados con la posibilidad de rodar allí el vídeo, pero… ¿y si a él no le emociona tanto la idea? ¿Qué pasa si no está de acuerdo con que más de veinte personas se hagan con su casa y la llenen de cámaras, luces, comida…? (sí, al fin y al cabo será un largo día de trabajo y todos necesitamos comer en algún momento).

Visitamos la localización con la mejor de nuestras sonrisas y prometiendo ser buenos. Tomamos medidas, barajamos distintas opciones respecto a ángulos y objetivos… y lidiamos con el dueño del lugar. Se trata de un tema particularmente delicado porque de hecho esta localización es su casa, y ha tenido malas experiencias pasadas con grandes equipos de producción, por lo que siempre prefiere ceder su espacio a pequeños equipos de fotografía. Se trata, sobre todo, de una cuestión de respeto de cara a sus vecinos. No hay problema, accede a nuestra petición y nos informa además de cómo podemos organizar el catering para el día del rodaje. Las cosas no podrían ir mejor. ¿O sí?

De repente nuestras expresiones se hielan. El 1er asistente de cámara llama diciendo que le han ofrecido un trabajo de tres días en Italia. Nosotros sólo le ofrecemos trabajo para dos días. Mark, el director de fotografía, nos suplica que encontremos una solución a este problema, incluso que pospongamos el rodaje. No, no es posible. Ya hemos contactado con los actores, con el Consejo de Europa, con el otro estudio. Mark confía ciegamente en este 1er asistente de cámara y considera imprescindible su colaboración en este proyecto. Usaremos una tecnología muy nueva y sólo se siente seguro si trabaja con él, ya que pocas personas conocen estos equipos. Una vez más se demuestra cuánta gente realmente imprescindible hay detrás de los vídeos, cuando realmente la cara que vemos es tan sólo la de unos pocos actores.
